The Estonian Forensic Science Institute covers the entire country. The working areas of its regional departments are the same as those of the Prosecutor’s Office and police prefectures.
The institute’s main office is in Tallinn and houses management, the DNA Department, the Document Department, the Chemistry Department, the Traffic Department, the Fingerprint Department, the Technical Department, the Forensic Science Division of the Security Police, the Forensic Psychiatry Department, the Economic Division, the Administration Division, the Quality Division, the Personnel Division.
The Chemistry Department's toxicology laboratories are situated also at 19 Ravila Street in Tartu.
The Forensic Psychiatry Department is situated in Tallinn, but experts working places are also in Tartu and Kohtla-Järve.
The institute has four regional forensic science departments: 1) the Northern Estonian Forensic Examination Department at Tervise street 30 in Tallinn, covering Tallinn and Harju County;
2) the Southern Estonian Forensic Examination Department at 19 Ravila Street in Tartu (Biomeedikum), covering the City of Tartu and Tartu, Viljandi, Jõgeva, Võru, Põlva and Valga Counties;
3) the Eastern Estonian Forensic Examination Department at 10C Ravi Street in Kohtla-Järve, covering Lääne-Viru and Ida-Viru Counties; and
4) the Western Estonian Forensic Examination Department at 1 Ristiku Street in Pärnu (Pärnu Hospital), covering the City of Pärnu and Pärnu, Lääne, Rapla, Järva, Hiiu and Saare Counties.
